REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

INNER EAR HAIR CELL REGENERATION INITIATIVE
FOR THE YEAR 2000

Request Grant Application #2

The National Organization for Hearing Research Foundation announces a Request for Applications to participate in an Inner Ear Hair Cell Regeneration Initiative. NOHR intends to provide 2-3 projects up to $250,000 a year for a five-year period. Funds will be awarded by December 20, 2000.

Applications will be reviewed by a Scientific Review Committee established specifically for this Initiative. At the conclusion of the third year, there will be an interim review by the Scientific Review Committee to evaluate each recipient's progress and discuss its research plans for the final two years of the grant period. Funding for years four and five will be contingent on satisfactory reviews.

Applications will be favored if the investigator indicates his/her intent to work with a collaborative group, each working in complementary areas. 1

NOHR expects that this Initiative, while respecting each recipient's independent pursuit of scientific knowledge, will expedite discoveries about inner ear hair cell regeneration through collaboration/dialogue with the other recipients.

Therefore, the NOHR Foundation will ask all scientists involved in the Initiative to participate in a completely open and cooperative research effort 2 by agreeing to the following:

  1. To create a communication link between researchers, either by e-mail or by other intranet communication link.
  2. To participate in quarterly conference call meetings and openly discuss the status of individual scientist's research efforts pertaining to the Initiative. 3
  3. To participate in bi-annual face-to-face meetings to report on the status of each scientist's research pertaining to the Initiative. 4
  4. It is expected that promising results would be discussed (see #2 & #3) at an early stage prior to publishing or publicly releasing research results.
  5. To acknowledge all scientists involved in the NOHR Initiative and the NOHR Foundation as the sponsoring organization in publications.

The deadline for submission of applications for the Inner Ear Hair Cell Regeneration Initiative is September 29, 2000.
